¶ “Digital Substations Learn How To Reliably Work With Variable Renewables” • Hitachi ABB launched its Smart Digital Substation. It combines digital technology with Hitachi’s own management software, to provide money-saving predictive management of substation assets, such as more variable renewable assets, energy storage, and power loads. ¶ “Storing Solar Power In Salt” • A team from the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials at the University of Wollongong is leading an international consortium in an A$10.5 million ($8 million) project funded by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency develop sodium-ion batteries for renewable energy storage applications. ¶ “Record 260 GW Of Clean Power Added In 2020” • A record of over 260 GW of new renewable energy capacity was installed in 2020, despite the impact of Covid-19, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency. IRENA said in its “Renewable Capacity Statistics 2021” report that new capacity in 2020 was nearly 50% more than in 2019. [reNEWS]

¶ “The Dutch Plan To Install A Million Chargers By 2030” • The Dutch discovered that they need an extra 1,500,000 chargers by the end of this decade. Part of the National Climate Agreement, the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda has five goals for the charging infrastructure to support the country’s transition to emission-free transport. ¶ “HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed And John Kerry Discuss Renewable Energy Projects” • The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, discussed the UAE’s efforts on climate change and renewable energy with US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, during the first Regional Climate Dialogue. ¶ “Canada Launches Electric Vehicle Awareness Campaign” • The Zero-Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative is part of a broader $600 million investment the government of Canada has made to advance EV adoption. ¶ “Japanese JV Accelerates 160 MW Of Offshore Plans” • A joint venture of Wind Power Group, Tokyo Gas, and Vena Energy Holdings is to speed development of the Kashima Port offshore wind farm off Japan. The project, with a capacity of nearly 160 MW, is to be located in Kashima Port in Ibaraki Prefecture. Its construction is to begin in 2024. [reNEWS]

¶ “Abu Dhabi Generated Some 2.16 Million MWh Of Renewable Electricity With $2.45 Billion Investments In 2020” • In 2020, the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, produced 2.16 million MWh of electric energy from renewable sources and invested over $2.45 billion in renewable energy projects, including the 2-GW Al Dhafra Solar Power project. ¶ “TechnipFMC, Bombora Partner On Wind-Wave Hybrid Floater” • A partnership of TechnipFMC and Bombora combines Bombora’s multi-megawatt mWave wave energy technology with TechnipFMC’s technologies and experience delivering integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation projects offshore. ¶ “DISCOMs’ Outstanding Payments to Renewable Generators Cross ₹123 Billion in February” • Distribution companies owed ₹123.45 billion ($1.68 billion) to renewable energy generators (excluding disputed amounts) in overdue payments across 206 pending invoices at the end of February 2021, data released by India’s Ministry of Power shows. ¶ “Some In California Want To Slow Rooftop Solar Adoption – Does That Make Sense?” • Considering that rooftop solar power now costs considerably less than California retail electricity on a system’s lifetime basis, net metering on top of the federal solar tax credit encourages a lot of homeowners to go solar. ¶ “Berkeley Urges Residents To Opt For 100% Renewable Electricity” • A city of Berkeley press release urged Berkeley residents to opt in to a 100% renewable electricity plan, as the city recently did. “Switching to 100% renewable energy at home is one of the easiest ways all of us can help fight climate change,” the press release states.
