There’s a crisis, all right, but it’s not some desperate need for AI. Instead, it’s the fires, droughts, glacier breakdowns and extreme weather due to collapsing climates. [CT Mirror]

¶ “Global Economic Impact Of Iran War ‘Unbearable,’ Qatar Warns” • The Iran war has put an “unbearable” strain on the global economy, Qatar warned. It said meetings aimed to reach a deal are continuing and Doha has resumed its role as a mediator between Washington and Tehran. However, it warned its role could come to an end. [Euronews]

¶ “What Is An EU ‘Associate Member’? Why Is Canada The First?” • European Commission’s Ursula von der Leyen invited Canada to become the EU’s first “associate member.” Canada would integrate directly into Europe’s defense industrial base, cooperate on AI, cyber resilience, and quantum computing, and potentially align on financial services. ¶ “Italy’s Battery ‘Gold Rush’: Energy Storage Creates A New Market” • Huge battery storage systems are needed to support a grid dominated by renewable energy, able to absorb surplus energy and feed it back later. Their role is so important that it started a “gold rush,” with Italy in a leading position. Italy will need about 72 GWh of storage by 2030. [Euronews]

¶ “UK’s biggest AI supercomputer may have to wait until 2030s for enough power” • The launch of the UK’s largest planned AI supercomputer, due to open next year, could be delayed until the 2030s because of problems securing enough electric energy. The site is being developed in Loughton, east of London, by the UK-based start-up Nscale. [Euronews]

¶ “Driving An EV Now Costs Half As Much As Diesel, Analysis Shows” • EV drivers are paying, on average, less than half of what diesel drivers are paying for every kilometer, data analysed by T&E shows. ¶ “Ørsted Celebrates As Barrow Turns Twenty” • Ørsted’s 90-MW Barrow offshore wind farm is celebrating twenty years of generating electricity for the UK after beginning commercial operation in 2006. During twenty years of operation, the output was enough to power the entire London Underground network for almost 150 years. [reNews]

¶ “Three EU Nations Call For New 2040 Renewable Energy Goal” • Spain, Portugal, and Luxembourg have urged the EU to set renewable energy targets for 2040, arguing that Europe should accelerate its clean energy rollout to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and on geopolitical disruptions to oil and gas supply. ¶ “Vestas Bags 614-MW Australian Double” • Vestas has secured two firm orders totaling 614 MW for the Parron Maam Marang wind farm, with 78 turbines, and Kondinin wind farm, with 21, in Western Australia. ¶ “GM Really Wasn’t Kidding About Those New LMR EV Batteries” • GM was among the US automakers that pulled back on their EV lineups when the federal EV tax credit was killed. But the company still kept its LMR batteries going through Ultium Cells, a joint venture with leading firm LG Energy Solution. Now that could pay off. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “New Sierra Club Analysis Shows US Public Pensions Hold Billions in Fossil Fuel Bonds” • Sierra Club released an analysis of public data published by Urgewald on bond holdings by forty US public pension funds. ¶ “Kelvin Wave In Pacific Ocean Heads Toward California” • With the strong El Nino, prevailing winds are pushing warm Pacific waters against the coast of South America. ¶ “Ameren Missouri Proposes Pollution-Heavy Future to Power Data Centers” • Ameren Missouri filed a proposed energy plan with its regulators at the Missouri Public Service Commission. ¶ “TVA Receives Federal Permit To Build First Advanced Small Nuclear Reactor In US” • The Tennessee Valley Authority got a construction permit from the US NRC for a BWRX-300 small modular reactor at its Clinch River Nuclear Site near Oak Ridge.
