¶ “ArcelorMittal Invests €1.3 Billion To Produce ‘Green Steel’ At Its Dunkirk Plant” • ArcelorMittal formally confirmed that will invest €1.3 billion in an electric arc furnace at its Dunkirk plant. The company’s plan is to produce steel without coal, whose combustion generates significant CO₂ emissions and contributes to global warming. [Euronews]

¶ “Cuba Says Airlines Can No Longer Refuel On The Island Due To US Oil Blockade” • The Cuban government issued a notice warning that no jet fuel would be available at nine airports on the island, including José Martí International Airport in Havana, from February 11 until 11 March, due to a US blockade of oil from Mexico and Venezuela. ¶ “Boreal Forests Are Expanding Northward Due To Warming Climate, Satellite Images Show” • Boreal forests are shifting northward as they warm due to climate change, several decades of satellite images show. Annual surface temperatures in boreal forests have increased about 1.4°C, or 2.52°F, over the last century, according to a study. [ABC News]

¶ “Russian Border Regions Are Facing Blackouts After Ukrainian Strikes, Governors Say” • Governors of two Russian regions bordering Ukraine said residents face sustained power outages due to Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure, as both sides continue strikes as the fourth anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukrain approaches. ¶ “BYD Challenges EV Range Assumptions With 1000 Km Denza Z9” • MIIT filings for a new Z9 from BYD’s Denza premium brand indicate that several battery EV models will get larger batteries that push their range beyond 1000 km (621 miles). More expensive EVs have had that range before, but Denza is making it more affordable. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “Alarm Forces TEPCO To Halt Restart Of World’s Largest Nuclear Plant After Just 24 Hours” • An alert from a monitoring system went off while workers were starting up reactor number six at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, prompting a halt of operations, TEPCO said. It does not know how long it might take to resolve the issue. [AOL.com]

¶ “Muirhall Wins CFDs For Four Sites In Scotland” • Muirhall Energy has been awarded Contracts for Difference for four onshore wind projects in Scotland. The company said the awards total 143.3 MW at a strike price of £72.24/MWh, cover two wind farms in Dumfries and Galloway, one in the Highlands, and one in West Lothian. ¶ “Corio-Total Get Green Light For 1.5-GW Outer Dowsing” • UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has granted planning consent to Corio and TotalEnergies’ 1.5-GW Outer Dowsing wind farm off England. A final determination had been due in October 2025, but the deadline was postponed to allow officials time to request and consult on further information. [reNews]

¶ “Onshore Wind Lands 1.3-GW Haul” • More than 1300 MW of onshore wind capacity has secured Contracts for Difference in the UK’s Allocation Round 7a (AR7a) auction. A total of 27 projects were successful in winning 20-year support deals at a clearing price of £72.24/MWh (in 2024 prices). The bid ceiling had been £92/MWh. [reNews]

¶ “Britain Secures Record Amount Of Solar In Renewable Power Auction” • Britain secured a record amount of solar power in an auction offering renewable projects guaranteed electricity price contracts, the government said. It is seeking to meet its clean energy targets and drive down costs. The UK target is to largely decarbonise its electricity sector by 2030. [MSN]

¶ “2026 Nissan Rogue Plugin Hybrid Pricing Starts at $45,990” • Combining all-electric convenience for daily commutes with the familiar flexibility of a gasoline engine for longer journeys, the 2026 Nissan Rogue Plug-in Hybrid will reach dealerships in February with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price1 starting at $45,990 for the SL grade. ¶ “Sierra Club Appeals EPA Approval Of South Carolina’s Do-Nothing Pollution Plan” • The Sierra Club appealed the EPA’s approval of South Carolina’s plan to reduce air pollution at its scenic national parks and wilderness areas. The Regional Haze program of the Clean Air Act is intended to reduce air pollution that impair visibility at public lands. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “Trump Administration To Make Climate Denialism National Policy” • Continuing the theme of doltishness and mass human harm, the Trump administration seems to be aiming to make climate change denialism US national policy. Why? Because we are apparently a petrolstate being run by a mixture of Homer Simpson and Mr Burns. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “The United States Sacrificed $35 Billion In Clean Energy Projects Last Year” • A report from clean energy think tank E2 says new investment in clean energy projects was dwarfed last year by cancellations for projects already in progress. § The most recent reported status of US nuclear power plants can be found at the US Nuclear Power Report, a distressingly dull account of NRC news, posted when the NRC gives us news to post. On February 11, out of 94 US-licensed power reactors, 12 were at reduced output and 4 not operating.

§ Video: Energy Week #660 – 1/29/2026: Mushrooms could save the world. Coal is declining in China and India. Offshore wind is winning against the Trump administration. Money intended to provide for energy upgrades is instead going to keeping old coal-burning power plants open. A plan to provide data centers with baseload power has big flaws. Trump is demanding Greenland and he told the prime minister of Norway that he is not interested in peace because he didn’t win the Nobel Peace prize. And there is more.
