¶ “‘Our Bodies Bear The Cost’: Patagonia’s Firefighters Battle Blazes And Austerity In Ancient Forest” • Wildfires are ravaging its once-pristine forests in Patagonia. Vast areas in the majestic, forested slopes of Argentina’s Los Alerces National Park, home to 2,600-year-old trees, are ablaze. The UNESCO World Heritage site looks like a war zone. [Euronews]

¶ “Why Fast Charging And European Factories Are Key To The EV Race” • Once known as a battery maker, BYD has evolved into one of the world’s most influential EV makers, recently passing Tesla in global EV sales. In 2025, BYD sold 2.26 million battery EVs, comfortably surpassing Tesla’s 1.63 million deliveries. But BYD is more than that. [Euronews]

¶ “Europe Is Finally Admitting Electricity Is Overtaxed” • The leaked European Commission recommendation on electricity taxation quietly said something that European energy policy has avoided stating plainly for decades: Electricity is still taxed as if it were a polluting end product rather than the clean energy carrier Europe increasingly needs. ¶ “European Investment Bank Gives Green Light to €3 Billion for Clean Transition” • The European Investment Bank board approved a €3 billion Frontloading Facility providing revenues to countries for preparing citizens for higher fuel costs, once the EU’s carbon price on heating and fuel kicks in. ¶ “How Climate Economics Got the Risks Wrong” • A study by researchers associated with the University of Exeter and Carbon Tracker argues that widely used economic models underestimate the risks of climate change. They smooth impacts over time, rely on average temperature changes, and ignore shocks, tipping points, and cascading failures. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “RWE Signs Five-Year UK PPA With Lidl” • RWE has signed a five-year power purchase agreement with Lidl GB for 100 GWh of electricity per year from the Gwynt y Môr offshore wind farm. Lidl said the supply will provide just over 15% of its electricity demand. The electricity will come from the 576-MW project in the Irish Sea, with 160 turbines. [reNews]

¶ “Nordex Wins 56-MW German Deal” • Nordex has secured a 56-MW order from Bürgerwindpark BHU Betriebs GmbH & Co KG for a community wind farm in Schleswig-Holstein. Nordex said it will deliver eight N163/6.X turbines on 118-metre tubular steel towers for the Bosbüll Holm Uphusum project spanning three villages in North Frisia. [reNews]

¶ “Nova Scotia And Massachusetts Ink Offshore MOU” • The province of Nova Scotia and the state of Massachusetts signed a memorandum of understanding that could see Nova Scotia send offshore wind power to Massachusetts in the coming years. The agreement comes as the Canadian province hopes to launch its first seabed lease auction this year. [reNews]

US:

¶ “LNG Explosion In Louisiana” • Cameron Parish was rocked by an explosion along the Delfin LNG pipeline near Holly Beach and Johnson Bayou that has left one person injured. It was a stark reminder of the dangers of fossil fuel infrastructure. In response, the Sierra Club and For a Better Bayou released a statement on the problem. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “Particle Pollution From Wildfire Smoke Was Tied To 24,100 Deaths Per Year In US” • Chronic exposure to wildfire smoke is linked to tens of thousands of deaths annually in the US, a study in the journal Science Advances found. Tiny particulates in wildfire smoke contributed to an average of 24,100 deaths per year in the lower 48 states from 2006 to 2020. [ABC News]

¶ “Tesla Had 46% Of US EV Market In 2025 (Down From 49% In 2024)” • It’s taken time, but we finally crunched the numbers for the US EV market in terms of auto brands and auto groups. (That’s full battery-electrics, not inclusive of plugin hybrids.) For starters, Tesla retained heavy dominance in sales over the rest of the US EV market. [CleanTechnica]

¶ “DOE Prepares To Send Nuclear Waste Cross-Country” • A rail journey years in the making will start from Dominion Energy’s North Anna nuclear plant in Virginia in the fall of 2027 bound for Idaho National Laboratory. A specially designed railcar will be used to move a 180-ton lead and steel cask containing spent nuclear fuel over 2,500 miles. [E&E News by POLITICO]

¶ “Oregon Bill Seeks Temporary Fast-Tracking For Siting Of Renewable Energy Projects” • Oregon lawmakers are considering a bill that would fast-track siting and permitting of renewable energy projects. The Trump administratio’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” imposed new deadlines on projects, and the state bill may help with that. [Oregon Public Broadcasting]

¶ “US Nuclear Power Regulator Plans Changes In Line With Trump Goals On Reactors” • The US NRC said it is ‌undergoing a reorganization in line with President Donald Trump’s goals ⁠on speeding ‌up licensing of nuclear reactors. The agency said in a release it will ​appoint leaders for ‌the reactor safety program and a new management plan ​within 60 ​days. § The most recent reported status of US nuclear power plants  can be found at the US Nuclear Power Report, a distressingly dull account of NRC news, posted when the NRC gives us news to post. On February 5, out of 94 US-licensed power reactors, 10 were at reduced output and 4 not operating.

§ Video: Energy Week #660 – 1/29/2026: Mushrooms could save the world. Coal is declining in China and India. Offshore wind is winning against the Trump administration. Money intended to provide for energy upgrades is instead going to keeping old coal-burning power plants open. A plan to provide data centers with baseload power has big flaws. Trump is demanding Greenland and he told the prime minister of Norway that he is not interested in peace because he didn’t win the Nobel Peace prize. And there is more.
